Early this morning shortly after 2:30 am, Louisiana State Police began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA 44 north of LA 3214 in St. James Parish. The crash took the life of 19 year old Gonzales teenager Sidney L. Lomas. This is the second fatal crash to occur in this area in two days.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Lomas was driving a 1998 Saturn SC south on LA 44. For unknown reasons Lomas failed to negotiate a right hand curve, and his vehicle crossed over the northbound lane and left the roadway. After leaving the roadway, Lomas’ Saturn struck a utility pole.
Lomas was seriously injured and was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales where died from his injuries. Lomas was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Driver impairment is unknown at this time; however, excessive speed is considered to be a factor in the crash. Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Lomas to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
