Escapee Keana Barnes Captured in Los Angeles
Officials from the Los Angeles Police Dept report that they have captured Keana Barnes. Barnes confessed about her escape while LAPD officers were attempting to identify her for loitering this morning. Barnes is expected to appear in federal court Wednesday in Los Angeles. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections is in contact with California officials
Barnes escaped from the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women by climbing over a fence at the jail facility in January. Police say she injured herself in the escape, based on blood evidence left behind.
Police searched for Barnes in the New Orleans area, since she had family there.
Residents near the prison expressed their grief with state authorities who did not notify them of the escape. It was the second prison break in a week from the same facility, which is located in St. Gabriel, La.
In May of 2003, the marshals’ task force captured Barnes who had fled to Mexico after allegedly killing two men (in separate incidents) as they slept. One of Barnes’ alleged victims, Perry Jennings, brought Barnes home to join his family for Christmas dinner in 2001. Federalized marshals from NOPD and the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office teamed with the U.S. Air Force Special Investigators Unit and determined that Barnes had fled the state with Jennings’ car, a gun and a debit card. She drove to Houston and stopped at a Wal-Mart. Inside, a store video camera captured her using Shepherd’s debit card to buy black and red hair dye and extensions. She then drove to Mexico via Brownsville, Texas.
