In April the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office received several reports of blank checks being stolen out of mailboxes in neighborhoods around Central and Zachary. An investigator assigned to the case found that 5 of the victim’s checks were forged and passed at Walmart stores in Zachary and Central. After obtaining surveillance footage from both stores investigators turned to Crime Stoppers for assistance identifying the black female in the footage. With the help of the public, investigators were able to identify the suspect as Antwyla Jackson, 37, 1275 McHugh Rd in Baker. Jackson was arrested on May 23rd in connection with the 5 forged checks. Another investigation being conducted at the same time relative to a single stolen check being passed at the Central Walmart lead to more charges for Jackson after investigators reviewed surveillance footage. At the same time an investigator with the Zachary Police Department was investigating 4 stolen checks that had been passed at the Zachary Walmart. After reviewing surveillance footage from that store it was learned that Jackson was also responsible for those forgeries and thefts. Jackson was booked for all 11 stolen check incidents and transported to EBR Parish Prison where she was held on a $55,000.00 bond. She was released on June 7th. On June 12th investigators were contacted about 2 more checks being stolen from the same neighborhood and also passed at the Central Walmart during the same time frame as the other incidents. No surveillance existed for these 2 checks due to the time which had passed since the incident. On June 19th deputies arrested Jackson again and charged her with these 2 forgeries and thefts. At the time of this arrest investigators gave Jackson the chance to admit any other thefts she may have committed to avoid multiple future arrests should any new cases arise but Jackson refused to speak. She was once again booked into the EBR Parish Prison where she is currently awaiting bond. The charges for Jackson in both cases include 9 counts of forgery, 8 counts of theft, 7 counts of illegal possession of stolen things, 4 counts of identity theft and 2 counts of access device fraud.

Brett Gerald, the man who plead guilty to seven counts of vehicular homicide last December, is looking to have his sentence reduced yet again. Gerald was initially given 70 years in prison for the homicides, but in May a judge reduced it. Judge William Carmichael reduced the sentence to 35 years, half of the original. Gerald must serve 85 percent of the new sentence, which means almost 29 years and 9 months. His attorney, Tommy D’Amico, filed the motion asking the judge to consider Gerald’s “extreme remorse for the harm that he caused, his lack of intent to cause harm and his positive value to his family and his community.” Gerald’s attorney’s plan to file another appeal claiming that the 35 year sentence is excessive and should be reduced even further. The group killed in the crash caused by Gerald was headed back to Baton Rouge from a bible study in Clinton. Brenda, Denise, Diamond, Jyran and Angela were all killed instantly in the crash. Willie Gaines was taken off life support June 3, 2012. His family decided to donate his organs. Rogerick Johnson, 13, was later taken off life support and also died.

Baton Rouge Police have arrested a local couple for allegedly selling narcotics to college students while the woman’s three children were present . An investigation was launched after the department received several anonymous complaints about the drug sales occurring in the home on West Grant Street. Investigators set up a surveillance of the home and witnessed a “hand to hand” drug transaction in the front yard. The three children were in the front yard when it took place. The male suspect, Chad Casteel, 41, also known as “Fat Chad” to his customers, was followed in his vehicle and a traffic stop was conducted after Casteel failed to signal upon turning. Casteel had small amounts of crystal meth, and $645 in cash. The man driving the car told officers that the two were on their way to purchase more crystal meth. Casteel told the officer that he did not intend to sell the drugs, they were for his personal use, along with his wife, Catherine Harold, 27. On Tuesday, June 11, the officer spoke to Harold at the home she shares with Casteel. She allegedly told the officer that there were no drugs in the home and voluntarily allowed officers to conduct a search. Investigators recovered two packets containing .44 grams of suspected heroin, three clear baggies containing 3.35 grams of marijuana, 31 dosage units of morphine, 7 dosage units of hydromorphone (dilaudid), two digital scales with residue on them, and two pipes that are suspected to have been used to smoke crystal meth. Child Protective Services came to the scene because the three children were inside the home during the search. The agent assigned to the case told the officer that they have an “extensive history” with Harold. Casteel was arrested and charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute (schedule I and II). His bond was set at $75,000. Harold was arrested and charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute (schedule I and II, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Cruelty to Juveniles. Her bond is $62,500. Both were booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
